I am an American statistician who invented the tabulating machine. It is considered the first computer, the first that achieves automatic data processing.I first began working on the design of a tabulating machine or surveyor, based on punched cards.

I patented my machine and later included the operation of addition, to use in accounting for the New York Central Railroad.I have also founded the Tabulating Machine Company business, in order to commercially exploit my invention. The company then merged with Computing Scale Company, International Time Recording Company and Bundy Manufacturing Company, to create the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation (CTR).
